Kevin Hull: future Vice-President

I think part of the election process is finding a candidate that you can relate to.  Usually – I can’t related to anyone - none of them have admitted they watch professional wrestling and are addicted to Mario Kart on the wii.

But now – I’ve found my candidate.  Sarah Palin – from sportscaster to Vice Presidential candidate!!  PERFECT!!

but…could he solve it?

I first saw this video on one of my new favorite sites – www.sportscracklepop.com - but if you haven’t seen it, its worth a watch.

Is there anything Tiger Woods can’t do?

who wears this stuff?

I’ll admit it:  I kinda got into the Olympics.  I found myself caught up in the drama, the events, the competition – and I couldn’t stop watching.  In fact, I even thought about buying some “Team USA” gear to wear around town.

Then I went to the website and didn’t buy a darn thing.  Here’s why:

You have to be a HUGE Kobe Bryant fan to wear this shirt.  And even then – its a little absurd.  There is also one for LeBron James and Yao.  They all look like this.  Enormous faces.  No thanks.

The symbol on the shirt means “wisdom”.  Safe to say, I have enough wisdom to know this is one ugly shirt.  Purple with yellow writing?

Maybe I’m just not hip enough to appreciate the ‘blue stripe/blue shiny USA’ on this one.  But I can already picture my friends’ reactions if I rolled into a bar wearing this.  Not pretty.

That’s right folks – its a skin tight red shirt with BEIJING written across it.  Its a “Ralph Lauren” – which probably means something to some people. Who looks at this and thinks, “yes…I must have it!”??

And these are just the t-shirts. They also sell hats, sweatshirts, jackets, hoodies – and they’re all awful.

Proud to be an American – just not proud enough to wear some ugly clothes.

the straw that broke my back…

I’m not sure when it happened.  It’s sort of become the new ’need a penny, take a penny’ sensation that happened years back.  But when did straw paper end up with it’s own trash receptacle?

Everywhere I go there’s that tiny trash can with an index card taped to it telling me to ‘put straw paper here’.  Why does it go there?  Is the paper sent to some special straw paper recycling factory?  Does it not get along with the other trash paper?  Are straws simply elitist?

In any case, I’ve chosen to dispose of my straw paper in the big-boy trash can, and I urge you to do the same.  Help start the movemen.  Let’s put an end to the separation of trash.

Can’t we all get along?

New Hanover football practice

Now that the games are counting, its time to hit up practice as teams prepare for Friday’s games.  This week: New Hanover.

A tough test for the Wildcats on Friday as they host Southeast Raleigh.  The Bulldogs are considered one of the best teams in the east.

Don’t be surprised if New Hanover has trouble scoring on Friday, but its not because of anything they’ve done.  Simply put - the SE Raleigh defense is awesome.  In fact, Wildact head coach Kevin Motsinger said he figured the Bulldogs have the best defense New Hanover will play all year.  Its easy to see why: they have a defensive tackle who weighs 380 pounds and a linebacker who has his pick of colleges.

With low scoring games, it usually comes down to the little things – so the Wildcats spent a large amount of time working on special teams.  Judging by what I saw, the kick return game seemed pretty impressive.

Overall, Motsinger seemed pleased with his team so far – praising their character more than anything.  He said his players had done everything they had been asked in the weight room, in the classroom, and in the community.  If they didn’t – they weren’t on the team.   You have to give Motsinger a lot of credit for attempting to clean up the image of New Hanover football.  Hopefully for his case, the wins will follow.

Southeast Raleigh at New Hanover on Friday – we’ll have the highlights on Friday Night Football.

No-lympics…

After a week of really enjoying the summer Olympics, I’ve become bored with the games and Saturday night may have put the games to bed for me.

I can’t say for certain, but I think NBC covered the women’s Marathon from start to finish.  That’s two-and-a-half hours of watching women run.  Pam Anderson on BayWatch is one thing, insert-foreign-runner-here is another.

And it never seemed to end.  Each time I turned the channel and came back, there they were.  Still running.  Same woman in the lead.  Back to HGTV.  Oh, now they’re at the 1:21:53 mark…Who was watching this?  It was like NASCAR without the wrecks.

I’ll give the Marathon this, I did find it pretty cool when the woman who won actually made her way through the tunnel and into the Birds Nest.  Too bad it took two-and-a-half hours of coverage for it to happen.

Found this tonight thanks to a Google alert.  Sam Gore used to be the radio voice of the UNCW men’s basketball team.  Let’s just say he’s gone in a different direction.

McCumbee in the bigs…

It looks like another local athlete is heading to the big time.  Supply’s Chad McCumbee is rumored to be the front runner to replace Kyle Petty in the 45 car next season in the Sprint Cup.

He’s filled in for the Petty’s several times in the past two seasons and has apparently done well enough to earn the full time ride.

McCumbee’s rise is pretty amazing:  four years ago he played Dale Earnhardt Jr in a movie, and now he could be racing against Little E every weekend.

now what do I watch?

As I said on the air Saturday night – I’m completely hooked on Michael Phelps and his quest to win eight gold medals.  I’ve seen every race – even making sure I was back from the Jamboree Friday night to catch him.  It was awsome – but now he’s done.

So the question is: what I am supposed to watch now?

I heard that an estimated one BILLION people saw the last U.S. Basketball team game.  I was not one of them.   Is that what I’m supposed to be watching?  Basketball?

Any suggestions?  Am I missing out on a great event?

Jamboree Impressions…

The Jamboree is in the books.  I was at the first three scrimmages, and here’s my impressions:

  • HOGGARD:  Wow.  Doesn’t look like they’ve missed a beat from last year’s State Championship team.  Head coach Scott Braswell is a big University of Florida fan and its easy to see Brad Busby is the Tim Tebow of this offense.  If tonight was any indication – it looks like good times will continue on Shipyard Blvd.
  • WHITEVILLE:  The kids coached by Bob Lewis ran into a buzzsaw (Hoggard) in that first scrimmage.  But in addition to the tough opponent, it looks like this could be a rebuilding year for the Wolfpack.  Coach Lewis said as much at the luncheon – the kids were struggling to adapt to his style.  It showed tonight.  Through the first scrimmage, it looks like they’re still a work in progress and long way away.
  • SOUTH BRUNSWICK:  A solid performance for the Cougars.  I thought quarterback Zack Alcorn threw well: had a few dropped passes that should have been caught, but the game winner probably should have been intercepted – so I guess it balances it out.  I’ll give Gordon Walters credit – his kids are always prepared.  Maybe this is the year they get over the hump.
  • JACKSONVILLE:  A strong running game seems to be the ticket for the Cardinals.  I shot my video on their sidelines, and they have some HUGE offensive lineman that should be open some holes for those runners.  They probably won’t be able to compete with the 4A schools in the Mideastern, but perhaps a run in the 3A Playoffs.
  • WALLACE-ROSE HILL:  As I said the other day – I have my doubts about the spread offense for the Bulldogs, but they wow’d the crowd right off the back with a long touchdown pass.  A Wallace-Rose Hill throwing touchdown!?!?!  Quite the sight.  However, the offense stalled from then on out and couldn’t get anything going.   How quickly they adapt to the spread will clearly be the key to the season.  As always – the Bulldog defense was strong.
  • NEW HANOVER:  I’m guessing this will be the New Hanover offense this season: a) get it to Jermaine Jones.  b) everyone else get out of the way.   That’s how they scored their only touchdown – a short swing pass and some 70 yards later it was 7-6 Wildcats.  I was really impressed with their defense: constantly swarming the ball and not letting the WRH offense move.

But – its just a scrimmage for all these teams.  Who knows if these teams were saving it or showing off all the tricks?  I guess we’ll find out soon.  The real games start next week.
