they’re one already!?!

May 30th is a special day for me. It’s my daughters’ first birthday. It’s a day that is also special to our family which is why they, along with close friends, are traveling from across the country to celebrate with us.

That being said, this weekend is also a busy one in our local sports community. Both UNCW and Topsail will be playing important games. Not to discount what’s at stake for them, but I won’t be around to see it. I’ve taken time off to be with my girls. My family. The choice was an easy one. So for those of you out there who will no doubt take exception that our coverage may not be up to the usual standards this weekend, I’ll say I’m sorry. But I’ll also hope you understand.

To Madison and Kaitlyn.

Today is the first anniversary of your births; and so much has changed in a very short 365 days.

When your mom and I learned that we were having not one, but two children, you were immediately referred to as Twin A and Twin B. But now, you go by many names. At first we teased your grandparents by telling them you were going to be named Paris and Britney, two pop references I hope will have disappeared by the time you’re able to read this. Your given names of Madison and Kaitlyn bear no family significance, which now seems fitting because despite being ‘identical’ you both have truly become individuals in your first year of life.

Mads, Madzooks, Madzilla are just some of the names you’ve picked up as our first born. But Madison, ‘mad’ would be the last word I’d ever use to describe you. Day in and day out you’re quick to smile, laugh, and seem to enjoy the moment. By doing so you’ve touched the lives of so many; and so many that we don’t even know. Both you and your sister were a traveling circus in your first year. No matter where we would go people always had to stop to see the girls. It was irritating at first, but what I grew to appreciate was how people’s spirit seemed to be lifted, if just for that moment in their day, when they came in contact with you, and it still fills me up with pride.

Kaitlyn. My little bug. I’m not sure where that came from but it’s stuck and it’s been the only other name you’ve had. You’re my little fighter. One day we’ll explain to you the reasons we didn’t think you were going to make it, but you proved everyone wrong. You’ve caught up with your ‘big’ sister and challenge her, and us each day. Even in your first year you show a strong will, which I know is what brought you through the rough times before you were born. You’re inquisitive but at the same time timid. You’re quiet yet playful. You are a true mix of your mom and dad. I think the best of both of us.

Over this first year you’ve gone from fragile little babies who had to be fed through a syringe a milliter at a time to girls that are eating solid foods, holding their own bottles, taking first steps and trying to put together a language. You’ve come so far. Your mom and I should have taken the hint when you were born at 34 weeks and came straight home. There will be no holding you down.

But not everyday has been cotton candy. You’ve had your share of ups and downs. A five-week cold that led to sleepless nights and a faucet for a nose. A ‘female’ issue just before your first birthday. Visits here and there to the doctor just to put our minds at ease. But over the months of watching you grow we’ve been told time and again how fortunate we are to have such healthy and good girls.

As you continue to grow life will no doubt throw many things your way, and while I want you to experience everything, know that in one way or another I’ll always be there for you to help you find your path.

Until I met you both I didn’t know what it meant to truly love someone or something. Thank you for filling my heart.

Happy Birthday babies!

Rachael Ray: terrorist?

So what is exactly IS Rachael Ray wearing in the latest Dunkin’ Donuts ad?

Depends who you ask.

Looks like a normal scarf to me, but apparently not everyone agrees.

According to the Boston Globe, the commercial shown above has been pulled by DD because the scarf looks like the headdress worn by Arab men (a keffiyeh for you smart people).

How could someone possibly think Dunkin’ Donuts would be secretly putting pro-Arab messages in their ads?  When I see Dunkin’ Donuts ads, I think about delicious munchkins.  And I don’t mean Rachael Ray.

UNCW baseball to NCAAs

The UNCW baseball team is heading to the NCAA Tournament.  They recieved an At-Large bid on Monday.  Their first game is Friday at 2pm vs Elon.  All games are at Cary, NC.

Click on the WECT logo to see my story from Monday.  I’m not sure why it sounds like I’m talking from a tin-can, but I think that’s just how the new video player works.  Oh well.

living a Dream…

It wasn’t too long ago that Tamera Young was a skinny kid playing basketball at Laney.  Today she’s one of the newest members of the WNBA.  Tamera has been kind enough to Blog for us about her experiences as a Rookie.

Here in “Hot-lanta” with the Atlanta Dream new expansion team it is a thrill to be part of something new and so exciting. It has always been a dream of mine to be in the WNBA and now here I am at the age of 21 having my dream come true getting paid to do something I love.

In Tampa, FL for the draft, don’t know what I was feeling; or even thinking at the time. Was I excited, nervous, anxious, scared, happy, or just really blessed? I believe it was all of the above. To sit in a room with the caliber of players I was surrounded with was exciting. To be in the top 10 as a draft pick, being number one for a new expansion team was a shock. Sitting and waiting for my name to be called was nerve wrecking.

So many thoughts going through my head. Who’s watching, what if I don’t get drafted until the third round, or what if I don’t get drafted at all. Now here I am the #8 draft pick in the first round to the Atlanta dream living the life of a professional womens basketball player.

Excited, its the day before our home opener against the Detroit Shocks.Tamera

It’s up, it’s good!

Blog number two from Connor Barth at Kansas City Chiefs workouts.

Tuesday was the first day that I woke up and had butterflies since I landed at the airport on Sunday in Kansas City. I knew that today was my big day to show what I could do. I got up at the nice early time of
6:40 to a wake up call from the front desk. Since I didn’t have a rental car yet a bunch of the rookies all piled into the vans and headed over to the stadium. I was very hungry this morning so I headed straight to the buffet and when I saw that they were serving egg whites this morning my face lit up because that is my favorite dish for breakfast. When I was living at my house in Chapel Hill I used to make an egg white omelet almost every morning before I went and worked out. After breakfast I headed into the locker room to get changed for the day. Since kickers have so much free time because we don’t have to study the thick play books like everyone else I usually take some time to stretch and loosen up the muscles in my legs, to get them woken up a bit. After all of our meetings I got my practice jersey, helmet, and cleats and headed out to practice. I knew that today was going to be my first chance to impress the head coach and show him what I could do. As soon as I got out to the practice field I went through my warm up and got ready to kick. When my special teams coach yelled out for the field goal team, I jogged over and got mentally ready to perform. I went out and performed the way that I wanted to and made all three of my field
goal attempts. I was satisfied, but I knew that this was the first of many days that I would kick with the team and I know that I am going to have to be ready every practice because the two kickers I am competing against are very good and never miss. They are pros. After practice I headed back to the hotel and relaxed for a bit before I went out to eat at Longhorn Steakhouse with some of the guys. I talk about eating a lot because I love different food and especially
a good sweet potato and I knew Longhorn had them. We sat around and talked about how blessed we were  to be able to put on a Kansas City Chiefs helmet and go out and play the game that we love. It was a great
day because it was my first taste of what it was like to kick with the team and I am enjoying every second of it.

Well I am gonna get some sleep, hope everyone has a great day or night and goodnight from Kansas City.Connor

He’s arrived…

Connor Barth hasn’t forgotten where he comes from.

The Kansas City Chief free-agent has agreed to blog for us from his training in Kansas City where the Hoggard and North Carolina grad is trying to land a spot on the Chiefs opening day roster.

First Entry:

I woke up this morning at 5:15 very excited and not sure what was going to happen today. I talked to my roommate LJ, who is an offensive lineman from Central Florida and we kind of just sat on my bed for a few and talked about the opportunity that was ahead of us. We both said that it was going to be very tough, but that we would stick by each

other and work hard everyday.

I arrived at Arrowhead stadium and
went straight to the training room for a physical and of course those are not very fun. You go from EKG’s to having blood drawn, to all kinds of tests and x rays. It is always chaos the first day. After the physical I relaxed and ate some breakfast, which was excellent. All kinds of fresh fruit, egg whites, oatmeal, you can’t beat it and its a free meal! After breakfast I got all of my equipment and it was awesome to put on a Chiefs helmet. The schedule for the rest of the day was somewhat like what I was used to in college. We had a special teams meeting at 8:45, a team meeting at 9:15, and then position meetings after that.

After meetings I headed out to the practice field and it was awesome to get there and play football with professional athletes. I took it all in for a few and then got focused because I know it is going to be very tough to win the job because Nick Novack and Billy Cundiff are both great kickers that have pro experience. I warmed up with the team and then Coach Priefer, our special teams coach, charted 12 field goals from both hashes. I felt like I had a good day because I went 11 for 12 on fg’s and it was the first day working with the holder and snapper. I feel good about the first practice and I am hoping to build on it everyday. Now I am relaxing in my room watching the NBA playoffs and getting ready for another day in paradise.

sometimes stuff works out.

Because of the CAA Baseball Tournament in town this week, I’ll be working a lot this week.  So Bob was nice enough to give me a half day today since nothing was going on.  Figured I’d just lay on the couch and watch the entire Red Sox game.

Well – that worked out ok.  I saw every pitch of a no-hitter.  Pretty cool.

Your American Idol: CHUCK!

Through the commericals that are constantly running on FOX26 (and the updates from my mom), I’ve learned that American Idol is down to the final two.  And apparently, its David vs David.

How does this happen??  There are millions of people in the world, and somehow American Idol ends up with two people with the exact same name.  Why did they even put themselves in this situation to begin with?  Couldn’t they have picked one Dave – then told the other “we’ve already got a Dave, but you can be in the next one”.  Isn’t there a Chuck that can sing??  Instead - its Dave C vs Dave A.

It reminds me of why its always a struggle to do Hoggard High vs White Oak highlights (Vikings vs Vikings).  And they’re in the same conference!!  Again – how does this happen??

Anyways – good luck to Dave.  And enjoy the “Kids In The Hall” skit.

too much information.

The site I visit to get most of my fantasy baseball/football news is rotoworld.com.  All those sites are the same – but it just happens to be the one I prefer.

Today’s front page had info about Alex Rodriguez, Carl Pavano, and a couple of Indians.

Unfortunately, it also had a note about Jason Giambi.

Gross.

Open Wide For Some Soccer!!

Its Hammerheads season again.  If you didn’t know that - you’re not missing much.

Three games – three losses.  Not a good start.

To be honest, I don’t really have a lot to say about them and their season.  I’m really just using this as an excuse to show The Simpsons soccer clip.  I think its my favorite scene of all time.  GO PORTUGAL!
