I have no idea what just happened.
After looking like world-beaters Saturday night, the Seahawks looked like a completely different team tonight. They scored just 41 points and shot 28% as a team – both season lows. They gave a lot of credit to George Mason’s defense in the post-game presser, but I think it just wasn’t their night. Some nights the shots don’t fall – and that was Sunday.
Chad Tomko was lights out during the season – and then shoots 0-8. Daniel Fountain is one of the best pure shooters in UNCW history – goes 3-13. Todd Hendley: 1-7.
Sometimes there are big scientific explanations for things. And sometimes its just simple. I think its simple: just not their night.
And so we – and the team – are heading home tomorrow. Its a shame they couldn’t pull it out because waiting in the final is a very beatable William & Mary team. I managed to sit next to Tony Shaver on press row for a bit during the UNCW halftime and he seemed like a pretty nice guy. After watching him shake hands with just about everyone in the arena, I joked that he could probably run for mayor – he quickly responded with, “yeah…but back in November, I don’t think a single person would have voted for me”. Pretty clever – and probably true.
So now what for the Hawks? Todd Hendley thinks they’ve still got a shot at the NIT. As a tribute to johnnymets – I think that’s a big Todd Hundley swing and miss (former Mets catcher for those of you wondering). Basically – they need things to play out perfectly. UNCW needs George Mason to win, and VCU to get an at-large bid. And even then – they need to leap-frog several other teams to get in. But if the NIT committee feels they need at least one CAA team, that would have to be UNCW. So – I guess its possible. A long shot - but possible.
But with that said – for those four seniors – I hope there is another game. I would hate to think that their final performance as a unit was tonight’s performance.
kudos to Dick Magnum for the cool “tip off” photo.
