drexel v delaware. feel the excitement.

del v drexel

I feel like a super-cool actual journalist right now.  I’m sitting on press row BLOGGING while the Delaware-Drexel game is going on - as you can see from the photos, the view from press row isn’t exactly great (unless a bunch of bald dudes do it for you).  Anyways, the winner of this one gets UNCW.  I really don’t think it matters who The Dub plays next – both these teams seem to be pretty much the same.  Its not like its a game between VCU and Georgia State where there is an obvious team you’d rather play.

UNCW was lucky to get the first round bye – I think that’s a huge advantage in this tournament.  All these teams playing today have to win four games in four days – you’ve got to be very deep to be able to pull that off.  I’m not sure anyone has the depth to do that.  Frankly, UNCW is going to have a lot of trouble winning three in three days with their lack of depth.  I asked Todd Hendley that at practice today, and he even admitted – someone is going to have to step up on the bench – its too hard for the five starters to pull that much weight.  Trouble is – I don’t know where that bench play will come from.  I’m guessing Montez Downey will be counted on quite a bit.  Can he respond? I guess we’ll see tomorrow night.

Richmond is a strange city.  We drove down – what I assume – is one of the main streets in the city, and couldn’t find a restaurant.  We ended up eating at Subway (eat fresh) but that wasn’t exactly what we had in mind.  Hoping tonight we’ll have more success with a little more driving.

And – for the record – good seats still available for this one.  I’m guessing not many Delaware fans make the trip.

slow Friday

The GirlsMy oldest crawled for the first time yesterday.  It’s still not sitting well with me that it happened while I was at work, but at least it happened.  We’ll see if Kaitlyn follows any time soon, and maybe she’ll do it when daddy is around.

Friday in the office usually means qualifying, and today is no exception.  The Cup series is in Atlanta, and I’ll continue my NASCAR rant.

Earlier this week Carl Edwards was penalized 100 points for cheating.  Sure it knocked him out of the lead in the points standings, but c’mon.  He, or at least someone on the team, cheated to win and were caught, and all NASCAR does is take some points away?  Officials have said time and again that they are going to come down, and come down hard on cheating.  How about taking a race win away from a guy who cheats?  How about suspending a driver for a race or two after violations are found?  To me, that’s coming down hard, and so far, those who have been caught have gotten off easy.

Friday afternoon in Richmond

a quick note on last night’s CAA Awards banquet… I really feel Benny Moss got robbed when he didn’t win “Coach of the Year”.  His team had an enormous turnaround – and more importantly – is playing their best basketball at the end of the year.  The coach who did win – W&M’s Tony Shaver – lost six of his last seven.  Not good.

Friday’s Practice

To today’s action:  Went to UNCW’s practice this morning.  Daniel Fountain was practicing and looking good.  He told me he’ll play tomorrow and that there was no way he was missing the game.  Both Dick Magnum and I agreed that he has the prettiest shot on the team – looks so fluid.  If he couldn’t play – the Hawks would be in serious trouble.

Practice was at the University of Richmond, which is either the most convenient or hardest place to get to.  We got five different sets of directions on how to get there – one from Star News’ Brian Mull, one from the front desk, one from map quest, and two from the valet stand.  And we’re happy to say that Wilmington represented well – as we followed Mull’s and that got us there a-ok.  Cool arena too – the Robins Center had a fun feel to it.  I bet it get pretty loud during game days.

Its funny how I was really excited about the ability to put pictures on the Orange Couch, and then the first picture ever on – is of downtown Richmond.  What a waste.

A sneak peek for those of you on the couch…Friday’s 6pm report from Richmond.
